About

At after-grad.com we provide you a glimpse of the life after graduation by asking graduates from a variety of fields to share their experiences

Here’s a list of the important things that you need to get and also stuff that you can avoid.

Clothing:-
Depending on the weather of the place you are going to. Make sure you have enough pairs of clothes since laundry is done generally only once in 15 days and in winters may even go to once a month.
Undergarments: 15 - 20 at least
Formal Wear: Full suit for boys with ties. MUST Bring
Traditional Wear: At least 1 or 2 pairs. Lots of festivals are celebrated here.
Socks: 6-8 pairs at least. It is important to carry thick cotton socks which will help in the winters as well. Carry mostly white and black socks only.
Towels: 2 suggested but you can manage with 1 also.
Jackets: Warm winter jackets could be necessary as per the weather of the place you go to.
Shoes: At least 2 pairs of casual shoes. Floaters/Slippers/Sandals for casual wear. Formal shoes to match your suit are a MUST
Bedsheets: Avoid getting double bed sheets. A couple of single bed sheets should be fine.
Pillows and Pillow Covers: Pillows are large in size here. Get pillow covers of the largest possible size you can. If you are not able to adjust with pillows you may want to get an air pillow. Getting a normal pillow from home would be a waste of a lot of space.
Razors: Get plenty of razors. They are pretty expensive here. You might also want to get an electric shaver. Also get after-shave lotions because they can get pretty expensive here.
Watches: If you are one of those who likes to wear wrist watches get a couple of them at least. Its not cheap to get a broken watch repaired.

Mentioned above were articles for personal use.

Utensils:-
It is advisable to decide on your room mates before you come so that you can share the utensils that you get. This could cause problems because staying with people you don’t know can be really difficult. So its up to you to decide whether you want to carry every thing that makes you self-sufficient or split things that you are gonna get. If you are not the fussy kinds who cannot adjust, you would rather reach your destination and look for similar room mates. We had decided on room mates before we came. The list mentioned below is thus from that point of view.
Cooker: 3 liter and/or 5 liter with all its changeable accessories
Kadhai: Medium Size - 1
Kadhai: Large Size - 1
Frying pan: 2 with strong handles. Non-stick preferred for beginners
Microwave utensils: As many as possible
Plates, Glasses, Spoons and Katoris: At least 6
Chimta: 1
Pakkad: 1
Patelis: 2 - 4
Tea filter: For tea drinkers

Eatables:-
Most of the things are easily available in most parts of US. It would be advisable to get the following things so that it is easier for you when you are settling in your new apartments.
Turmeric, Red Chilli Powder, Salt, Jeera, Hing, Mustard Seeds: 500g each
Poha, Rava, Dry Snacks like chivda, biscuits etc. will help you sustain yourself in the initial days.

Stationery’s:-
These are really easily available here. Might be slightly expensive though but not a great deal once you learn to stop converting from $$ to INR. Still I would suggest to get the following
Pens: 3 with a few spare refills
Pencils: Pen Pencils with leads. Here generally 0.7mm is used. You will write most assignments in pencil or soft copy.
Scale, Protractor, Compass(Rounder): 1 each
Bag: 1
The other things that need to be carried are glasses(spectacles - extra pairs if you really go blind without them), medicines(in case you need them regularly - with prescription only). Make sure to get Vicks vaporub, pain relief sprays, a few pain killers and regular tablets like crocin, brufen etc.

The most important thingis sign up on www.160by2.com This allows you to send SMS to any mobile in India for free over the internet. This is the best method to keep in touch with your friends and relatives. For more details visit the website.

Visit this page regularly for updates and inputs from other users. The above list is mostly from the point of view of a student who has decided room mates and is from the University of Missouri Rolla.

Sorry for the delayed reply. I have not come across any VoIP softwares to call India for free but there are a lot of cheap calling cards available. I personally use services from NetOne which are probably the cheapest with acceptable quality. All the best…

Its not a bad idea to apply. You will definitely get an admit or two. Do not expect to get into high ranked universities..
